The Art of Charcoal Making: New For Our 2025 Woodland Feasts

In the realm of outdoor dining, there’s something undeniably enchanting about gathering around a fire, surrounded by nature’s beauty. As we look towards 2025, Nomadic is excited to announce that we will be producing our own charcoal sourced directly from the estate, thanks to the expertise of our resident tree surgeon, Matt. This initiative enhances our commitment to sustainability and promises to elevate your unique dining experience in the woods.

Charcoal is more than just a cooking medium; it is the heart and soul of outdoor dining. The right charcoal can enhance flavours, create a mesmerizing ambiance, whilst consistency of temperature is fundamental in contributing to an unique and delicious dining experience. While many may overlook the significance of charcoal, it plays a pivotal role in transforming simple meals into culinary masterpieces.
 
– How to Make Your Own Charcoal
 
Creating your own charcoal can be a rewarding process, and it’s something we at Nomadic are thrilled to embrace. Here’s a simple guide on how to make charcoal, allowing you to bring a piece of our woodland experience into your own backyard.
 
1. **Gather Materials**: You’ll need hardwood logs, a metal container with a lid, and some kindling. Hardwood is crucial as it produces better-quality charcoal. 
 
2. **Prepare the Logs**: Cut your hardwood into manageable pieces. Smaller logs will carbonize more effectively.
 
3. **Create a Fire**: Start a fire in a safe, contained area and allow it to burn down until you have a good amount of hot coals.
 
4. **Carbonization**: Once you have a steady fire, place the logs in the metal container and cover it. This process limits the oxygen supply, causing the wood to carbonize rather than combust.
 
5. **Cool Down**: After a few hours, allow the container to cool completely before opening it. This is crucial to avoid combustion when oxygen reenters.
 
6. **Store Your Charcoal**: Once cooled, your homemade charcoal is ready to be used for grilling, smoking, or simply enjoying the warmth of a fire.
